Avira Phantom VPN Leak Test

Avira Phantom VPN builds its tunnel in two different ways: the Windows, Mac and Android apps use OpenVPN over TCP port 443, while the iOS app and the Mac App Store and Microsoft Store builds use IPsec. Its help centre says an active VPN cuts the device off from the local network, so local printers and mail servers can stop answering. Avira says the VPN cannot be used within India because of logging rules there. The free tier is limited by monthly traffic.

Live test

Run the test on Avira Phantom VPN now

Avira's own help centre says the protocol depends on which build you installed, so a result from the iOS or Microsoft Store app is not a result for the Windows app from avira.com. Run the test on each device you protect.

Current-session checks

What this Avira Phantom VPN self-test checks

The IP and DNS checks show whether your traffic and lookups leave through Avira or through your own provider. Repeat them per device, because the protocol changes with the build.

Before you read the result

What Avira Phantom VPN documents about these signals

Avira says the device is excluded from the local network while the VPN is on, which explains local devices that stop responding during a test.

Two protocols, depending on the build

Avira's ports article lists OpenVPN over TCP port 443 for Windows, the Mac desktop app and Android. The iOS app and the Mac App Store and Microsoft Store builds use IPsec over UDP ports 4500 and 500. Two devices on one account can therefore tunnel in different ways.

Local devices go quiet

Avira explains that while the VPN is active the device is excluded from the local network. Network printers and local mail servers may not answer until you disconnect. That is documented behaviour, not a fault in the tunnel.

What Avira says it records

Avira's help centre says it does not track the virtual IP addresses you use while surfing. It does count how much data you use, and diagnostic data, which is optional. The iOS listing says Avira's servers do not save log files.

Not available in India

Avira's App Store listing says the VPN is not available for use within India, because regulations there require logging and saving user data. It can still be used when travelling outside India. A test run from inside India would not reach an Avira server.

Free traffic limits

The iOS listing gives 500 MB a month without an account and 1 GB a month with a registered account on the free tier. The Pro version removes the cap. A connection that stops mid-test on the free tier may simply be the monthly allowance running out.

Between the readings

Record a kill-switch drop on Avira Phantom VPN

Avira's Google Play listing says the Android app can disconnect quickly with a kill switch and secure untrusted networks automatically. Check the setting in the app you actually use before relying on it.

What this cannot prove

  • This checks visible browser/session signals only.
  • This does not certify the provider.
  • This does not test every server, app, device, or connection.
  • This does not prove anonymity.
  • This does not prove every security condition.
  • A clean result does not prove every leak is absent.

How to compare before and after on Avira Phantom VPN

  1. Note your own IP, resolver and IPv6 lines with Phantom VPN switched off.
  2. Open the Phantom VPN build you normally use and connect to a location.
  3. Test again in the same browser on that same device.
  4. Expect an Avira exit address; repeat the run on any other device with a different build.
Safe Copy limits

Safe Copy exports use safe summary categories and remove raw IP, exact city, full user-agent, raw fingerprint data, raw resolver IPs and WebRTC candidates. It is not a certificate, provider audit, or proof of anonymity.

FAQ
