What does a Telstra IP mean in a privacy test?

A Telstra address as your visible IP means the connection reached the site over an Australian Telstra line with nothing tunnelling it. Where the address appears matters, though: AS1221 also carries a large amount of transit, so the same ASN shows up as a hop in traceroutes for traffic that never touched a Telstra customer line.

Where to get Telstra's address list

Telstra publishes no range file, so the APNIC database is the source. The aut-num for AS1221 carries the AS name ASN-TELSTRA and the organisation Telstra Limited in Australia, registered on 4 September 2008 and last changed in May 2024, and the prefixes above are the largest currently announced. The AS1221 page carries the registry record with the routing detail.

The two address families are lopsided in the opposite direction from most carriers. AS1221 announces a few hundred IPv4 prefixes but only a couple of IPv6 ones, and one of those is 2001:8000::/20 - a single announcement covering a vast amount of space. So an IPv4 list of Telstra is a few hundred lines of maintenance and its IPv6 equivalent is effectively one line. A filter that has to catch both is easier to write against the ASN than against either list.

Retail line or transit hop

The reverse DNS separates the retail side cleanly. 101.160.1.1 answers as cpe-101-160-1-1.bpjl-r-036.lon.vic.bigpond.net.au: cpe marks customer premises equipment, the address follows in dashes, then an equipment identifier, an exchange label and a state code, then bigpond.net.au - BigPond being the consumer brand Telstra retired but never renamed out of its DNS. A name in that zone is a subscriber line in a named Australian state.

An AS1221 address without such a name is the other half of the network. CAIDA's AS Rank places AS1221 in the global top hundred by customer cone, reaching several hundred other networks, so its addresses appear mid-path for traffic between third parties as well as at the ends. Read the position, not just the ASN: as somebody's visible address it is a Telstra line, and as a traceroute hop it is Telstra's backbone carrying somebody else's traffic.
