What does a Lumen (Level 3) IP mean in a privacy test?
A Lumen IP (AS3356) usually appears as a transit hop in a traceroute. If AS3356 is the network of your visible IP, your address is in space that Lumen announces itself. Networks that only buy transit from Lumen show their own ASN.

Lumen's blocks include 4.0.0.0/9, 8.0.0.0/12 and 8.240.0.0/12, which AS3356 announces, and 65.112.0.0/12, a CenturyLink allocation that AS209 announces. Many customer networks announce smaller routes inside these blocks.
Why does Lumen or Level 3 appear in my traceroute?
AS3356 is a Tier 1 backbone, ranked first in CAIDA's AS Rank with about 54,700 networks in its customer cone, so many internet paths cross it. Seeing Lumen or Level 3 hops in a traceroute is normal.
Is Lumen the same as Level 3?
Yes. Lumen owns it. CenturyLink bought Level 3 Communications in November 2017 and rebranded as Lumen in September 2020. AS3356 is still registered to Level 3 Parent, LLC. AS3356 is the same backbone network throughout these changes.
How do I look up a Lumen IP address?
Use MyIPScan IP Geolocation Lookup. Many Lumen addresses show AS3356, but customers announce some routes inside Lumen's blocks and those show the customer's ASN: 8.8.8.8 shows Google's AS15169. The location shown is approximate.
