What is 8.8.8.8?
8.8.8.8 is the primary IP address of Google Public DNS, a free recursive DNS resolver operated by Google LLC. Launched in 2009, it is one of the most widely used DNS servers in the world, processing billions of queries per day. Google routes 8.8.8.8 through its global anycast network, so the physical server responding to your query depends on your location.
Privacy note
If 8.8.8.8 appears in a DNS leak test, your DNS queries are going to Google's infrastructure rather than your VPN provider's resolver. This is one of the most common DNS leak patterns when a VPN does not enforce its own DNS.
